Our History

Your local Funeral Director in The Hope Valley

Ambrose Marsden was born in March 1864, he married Maria and they had six children. He was a Joiner, Wheelwright and Undertaker. His two younger sons Arthur and Harry joined him in the business and they traded as A Marsden & Sons from The Farm, Thornhill Lane End.

Ambrose died in October 1936 and the brothers then traded as A & H Marsden. Arthur died in October 1961 leaving Harry to carry on the business. Ted Noutch came to work for Harry and eventually became a partner, when Harry retired Ted continued to run the business and traded as J E Noutch.

Paul Tanfield came to work for Ted and has successfully run the Funeral Business for several years. Paul himself comes from a family background of Joiners and Undertakers and is well qualified to direct the business in the Hope Valley. He is assisted in the office by Melanie Brocklehurst. Ted Noutch retired in July 2014 when the business was acquired by the Jepson Family. The business continues to trade as J E Noutch and still operates from the same premises as it started over 100 years ago.
